![]() The hardest part about all of it, running two businesses, teaching, researching, writing, interviewing and producing products was definitely staying balanced and not feeling overwhelmed. I never went into my career wanting to become a fundraiser, but you have no choice in the world of non-profit. In order to make an impact, a non-profit organization must have a lot of support. That is typically something someone does later in life when they are settled. I often questioned why in the world I started a non-profit straight out of grad school at age 26 right after I started an LLC. ![]() It is physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. ![]() Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? I am currently working on my thirteenth children’s book and run the iWRITE Literacy Organization with the help of our amazing staff. As I continued to write and publish, I opened LongTale’s doors to other aspiring authors in 2013, and I take on about five client authors a year. To date, we have published over 500 3rd-12th graders at the iWRITE Literacy Organization and provide creative writing programming inside economically disadvantaged schools in Houston, Texas. The organization encouraged a healthy sense of competition and reward. Before the decline became so apparent, I had to start a literacy non-profit in 2009 giving creative kids the opportunity to enter their stories and poetry in an annual publishing contest. I began speaking at educational conferences and on television about how to balancing technology usage and encouraging creativity in childhood. I saw many problems schools and students faced during the rise of testing and a reliance on technology for entertainment.Ĭhildhood creativity and excitement slowly declined. By 2013 I had spoken in over 200 schools and 50 different school districts. The series became more of a travel adventure, taking me to each of the book settings in Hawaii and also Australia. It focused on environmentalism and issues that plague the ocean through the eyes of a twelve-year-old professional surfing box shell turtle. I had the opportunity to also tour in San Diego, California while researching for a new chapter book series called, Turtle Town. I spoke in over fifty schools across Texas my first year as an author in 2008, talking about character development, diversity and my love for reptiles in each of my presentations. ![]() They were published through my publishing company, LongTale Publishing, and I hit the schools as a visiting author. I had a passion for influencing self-confidence in children, so I started a series of books for upper elementary aged children called, Iggy the Iguana. My dive into the literacy world started immediately after graduate school for professional counseling. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
